Robert “Lou” Hirsch, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor of Plant Pathology at the University of Kentucky and the inaugural Director of FIELD, a collegewide center for pedagogical innovation that advances student success, curriculum redesign, and the scholarship of teaching and learning. His academic career follows a nontraditional path that began in the outdoors of Arizona and a maritime career as a scuba instructor and boat captain, a vocation he has continued for 24 years. At UK, he has earned every major institutional teaching award and is recognized nationally for his contributions to instructional innovation, outreach, and student-as-partner program development. He has led transformative academic programs including the Agricultural and Medical Biotechnology major, the Agriculture Individualized Curriculum, and now FIELD, which collectively modernize curricula, empower learners, and elevate teaching across the college. Lou's work integrates rigorous pedagogy, high-impact experiential learning, and broad public engagement, reflecting his commitment to developing the next generation of scientific and professional leaders.
